After graduating in 2007, Joel spent the first seven years of his career working for a medium sized structural engineering consultancy on the south coast of England. There he gained a wide range of experience designing new buildings across the commercial and educational building sectors. He became chartered with the Institution of Structural Engineers in 2013.
Following the Christchurch earthquakes, Joel moved his family from the UK to NZ and joined Batchelar McDougall Consulting to help with the rebuild work. Joel became chartered with Engineering New Zealand in 2015 and
founded Pocket in 2018. Since moving to New Zealand Joel has been responsible for a diverse range of projects across the new-build residential and commercial building sectors as well as assessment and strengthening of heritage structures.
Joel’s carefully considered approach to problem solving and his high level of technical ability has added a great deal of value to the projects he’s worked on. Joel has a pragmatic approach to his design work, always considering the practical aspects of engineering solutions and how they will be achieved.
